The theme for ‘World Food Day’ for the year 2020 is ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain, Together’. Life has changed for the entire world with the pandemic COVID-19. It has created a time for people to reflect on things we truly cherish and our basic needs. Taking care of one’s health has been given the most priority which has made everyone rekindle their appreciation for food. There is a major shift of focus to health and immunity with food being in the limelight. Preserving access to safe and nutritious food is and will continue to be an essential part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for the vulnerable communities, who are hit hardest. 

In recent years, there has been significant progress in improving agricultural productivity. Though we produce more than enough food to feed everyone, our food systems are not in balance. Hunger, obesity, environmental degradation, loss of agro-biological diversity, and food wastage are only some of the issues that cause this imbalance. As countries develop COVID-19 recovery plans, it is an opportunity to bring innovative solutions based on scientific evidence to build back better and improve the food systems.

World Food Day is calling for global solidarity to help people especially the most vulnerable, to recover from the crisis, and to make food systems more resilient and availability of sustainable healthy diets for all. We need to make sure that our food systems grow a variety of food to nourish a growing population and sustain the planet, together. We all have a role to play, from increasing the demand for nutritious food by choosing healthy and not letting sustainable habits fall, despite these uncertain times.
