Can we boost our immune system against Corona Virus?

The immune system is a well-designed system, you don’t want it to work more than normal otherwise it can lead to serious problems like auto-immune diseases. However, it is our duty to support our body systems in working to their best performance, and that is doable.

 

Few things science has proven related to the performance of the immune system:

 

Chronic stress is associated with the suppression of immunity. Consider stress management techniques like meditation, yoga and excercise. Also, give yourself a break, redefine your priorities and try not to focus on too many things a time.

 

Drinking alcohol more than one drink per day for women and 2 drinks per day for men can weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections. So, if you want to drink, do it responsibly.

 

Exercise is essential for a healthy body including a healthy immune system. It can promote good circulation, allowing the cells of the immune system to efficiently move and achieve their functions.

 

Regular adequate nutrition is needed by a healthy immune system to function normally. So, the next time you visit the supermarket, remember, the more colorful the fruits and vegetables are, the better. Aim to include a variety of food in your meals

 

Staying hydrated can boost your immune health too, Zumpano says. Water helps your body produce lymph, which carries white blood cells and other immune system cells. Try to avoid overdoing beverages that can made you dehydrated, like coffee. Or try eating more hydrating foods, such as cucumbers, celery or watermelon.

 

7 to 8 hours of quality sleep are recommended by the National Sleep Foundation, to keep your immune system strong. If you can’t make it,

take two naps less than 30 minutes each during the day, it  has been shown to help lessen stress and the negative effects that sleep deprivation has on the immune system.

 

Do I need to take vitamin supplements?

 

Yes, for people who do not eat well like some elderly with medical conditions. However, vitamins are better absorbed and used from real food.

Some supplements may have serious side effects, so be sure to consult with your doctor first.

 

Final note, even with the best performing immune system, the rules to protect yourself from catching the virus still apply ( like good hygiene and social distancing…) ; having a healthy immune system does not necessarily mean the virus cannot invade your body and cause damage.
